Atlas of The Roman Empire book illustrations

Close up detail of a hand drawn map of Great Britain from the Roman Empire days

I have illustrated a book!

I’m delighted to finally be able to reveal that over the last couple of years I have been working on illustrating a book, on, of all things, the Roman Empire – mainly depicting maps (my specialty) and battle scenes (I did manage to squeeze a few horses in, and even an elephant though).

I have been working with amazing book designer Sandra Zellmer who added all the arrows and keys and generally has made it look fabulous, thank you so much Sandra for getting me involved.

I was particularly pleased to be asked as in this day and age all my drawings are originally hand drawn in biro – take that Ai! Once they are hand drawn I scan them and tidy them and add colour digitally – a very time consuming process. Most of the text and the arrows in the maps were added by Sandra.

I am now an unintentional expert on the Roman Empire!

Here are a few shots of some of my favourites…there are over 40 altogether. I can’t even begin to tell you how much time and effort went into it, although I definitely got quicker towards the end.

Atlas of The Roman Empire by David Potter  is published by Riverside press, an imprint of UniPress.
