New In Search of Cygnus Islington Cluster piece on show in… Islington

The latest piece in my ‘In search of Cygnus’ series, the’ ‘Islington Cluster’, is going to be on show in the latest ArtCan exhibition in… Islington! Specifically at The Hare & Hounds, N1.

The exhibition is called Luminous and is a celebration of the summer and there will be a whole host of fabulous art to see.

My In Search of Cygnus series started out as a response to investigating the star constellation Cygnus, but since I had trouble viewing it due to light pollution in London, I instead started taking photos of discarded swan cigarette filter packaging. There are a lot of them about when you start looking!

These photos I have been turning into cyanotype prints ( the main star, Deneb, in Cygnus is blue and white) and then organising them by area, so this lot were all found in the borough of Islington.

After many attempts I finally got all the photos I had taken in Islington made into cyanotypes. This involves printing a negative version onto acetate and then exposing paper coated in the cyanotype soloution to u.v. light, then fixing it in water. There are many things that can go wrong, from the quality of the negative to the right amount of exposure time and how long the coated paper is left to dry – nearly everything that could go wrong did, so I am very happy with how it eventually turned out!

The exhibition is opening on Monday 20th April- Sunday 14th May *(update – Please note the exhibition had to close early due to unforeseen circumstances, so it will not be open until July 19th as mentioned on the flyer) .
